BELGIUM TAKES BRONZE AT EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL U23.
Our National U23 Baseball Team has won bronze at the European Championship Baseball U23 in Brno. It is at least two decades ago that Belgium takes a podium at the very highest European Baseball level!
After an incredibly exciting small final (game for third and fourth place of the E.C.) the young Belgium Red Hawks beat Spain with 3-2 in the extra innings. Pitcher Robin Roevens has pitched an impressive game, keeping Spain 9 innings from winning. With the scores tied at 2-2, the tenth inning was played according to the new and exciting tie-breaker-rule. Belgium scored another run and closing pitcher Lucas Rizzi managed to keep the Spanish young guns from scoring. End result Belgium vs Spain: 3-2 a terrific achievement and rewarded with a striking third place on the E.C.
U23 Head Coach Sven Hendrickx (who has managed a top 6 result in last year’s E.C. for our national senior team The Red Hawks and who was also named European Coach of The Year 2016) and his U23 coaching staff again achieved a wonderful result. “This super performance is mainly due to the amazing collective team effort of our young Red Hawks. And especially the stunning pitching performances of Drew Janssen and Robin Roevens last week. Baseball is on the up in Belgium, our third place emphasizes this again”.
The bronze medal at the E.C. assures the young Red Hawks a guaranteed spot in the following E.C. and it is also good for the ranking points that our country needs for the Olympic Qualifiers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where Baseball and Softball are back on the Olympic program.
